Ada Marie Lawson (née Cogswell)
Age 96 | October 9, 2026
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Ada Marie Lawson (née Cogswell), who passed away on October 9, 2026, in Woodstock, New Brunswick, at the age of 96.
Born in Lepreau, New Brunswick, Ada was the daughter of the late Otis and Susan (Donner) Cogswell.
Ada and her beloved husband, La Fay (Fay) Lawson, shared a life together in several New Brunswick communities, including Dorn Ridge, Penfield, and Nackawic. They eventually settled in Woodstock after leaving their home in Nackawic when it was to be affected by the flooding associated with the construction of the Mactaquac Dam. Wherever they lived, Ada and Fay made their home a welcoming place for family, friends, and neighbours.
A devoted Christian throughout her life, Ada’s faith was central to who she was and how she lived. Wherever she attended church, she faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher, sharing her faith and helping nurture generations of young people. She remained an active and devoted member of Calvary United Pentecostal Church in Woodstock.
Ada lived her faith not only through her involvement in the Church, but through a lifetime of kindness, generosity, and care for others. Her door was always open, and over the Years she welcomed numerous family members, friends, and students attending New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) into her home. Whether someone needed a place to stay, a helping hand, or simply a little kindness, Ada was always willing to help.
And then there was Ada’s bread. She was a wonderful baker, and the smell of fresh bread was one of the many pleasures of visiting her home. When Fay was ill, even the doctor learned to time his house calls for the days Ada was baking. Her neighbours were equally appreciative, bringing bags of flour to ensure that Ada—and everyone fortunate enough to share her table—would never be without fresh bread. It was a small but fitting example of the way Ada cared for Others, and the affection that came back to her in return.
A woman of many talents, Ada was also a poet, painter, and seamstress. She found joy in creating, whether through the written word, a painting, something lovingly made by hand, or a loaf of bread shared with someone who needed it.
Above all, Ada will be remembered for her steadfast faith, her caring heart, and the warmth and hospitality she extended to so many. Her life touched generations of family, friends, and others who were fortunate enough to find a place in her home and heart.
Ada was predeceased by her beloved husband, Fay, her daughter- inlaw Debbie Lawson, as well as her eleven siblings.
She is survived by her three children, Melvin (Carol) Lawson, Sheila (Kirk) Lappage, and George (Allen) Lawson; and her sister-in-law, Joan Lawson, and several nieces and nephews.
Ada was a loving grandmother to eight grandchildren: Kevin (Shelly) Lawson, Charles (Heather Thompson) Lappage, FayeCarol Lappage, Nicole (Damon) Dyer, Angela (Justin) Greer, Benjamin (Heather Reid) Lawson, Jenna (Justin) Horne, and Michael (Shyla) Lawson.
She was also blessed with eighteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, extending her family legacy across five generations.
Ada leaves behind a legacy of faith, compassion, creativity, and love. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her family, her church community, and the many people whose lives she touched.
